Painting With Digital Light

9 Jan

Remember the post where I told you about painting with Digital Light by Live Rasoloarison ?? ( worry not, it’s just a few posts below) well, I went ahead and gave it a shot some time back. Just this instant I thought to myself that it might make a good blog post. Well, how wouldn’t it?

Anywho, it was epic giving it a trial. I took a rather boring image and post processed it, kinda looking to give it that amazing light streaks that the other photographer had blown me away with.

Here it is,

Incase you are wondering, those are my pals. I am/ was involved in a dance group in school last year (this year too, God willing) An amazing bunch of dancers these guys are.  Okay, so yeah, I accredit all the inspiration behind this from that other post I told you guys about. What do you think, is it a type of processing I should explore??

So I told ya’ll I started my 365 project. Mine is a random one, where I get to create mini challenges for myself and  make sure that I complete them in the best way possible, for the next 3 hundred and 60 something (I think 1) days.

So today’s post was as random as any photo could be. I’ve always wanted to do a street shot. Which I think I will do many of them this year. Especially night shots, when I’m out of school. (Watch out for that) . So I was chilling outside a store in Bungoma. There is something about this town that is just so magical to me. I love how small and bursting with life this small town is.

I did not really plan this, that is why I’m saying that it was random, but I absolutely fell in love with the shot afterwards, I decided to do some cinematic with a greenish tint to it.

Here was the result.

So any way, my prayer is that my images grow even stronger this year. That I take time to strengthen my vision and my artistic abilities. I hope to make more friends, learn more, grow more…and also maybe, do a blog post more frequently.

I suggest viewing my flickr to see more of my images and comment on them.

Happy New year Folks

9 Jan

Happy new year folks,.. really, that is actually all I mean to say. I was hoping to have a bit quite few of some things going on this year, but well, that might wait. thekrox dot com was/is in the pipe line.

Any who, lots of new stuff happening this year. Lots of good stuff that I pray and hope that I will not be too bored to do. Or lazy for that matter. For one, I started a project 365. Which means that I get to post an image a day for 365 days on my flickr and G + , if possible, I might start doing DA (deviant art) also, then maybe facebook, who knows??.. but I’m into flickr and G + momentarily,.. waiting to grow.

The magazine, well that is another thing that I am hoping to work on this year, amidst numerous projects that I have suddenly found myself involved in. I usually like it when I am busy with creative and related matters.

Any way, I’ll keep you updated. Another resolution is to update my blog frequently and have people enjoy my content this year.

Stick around… oh and follow me on twitter already, that is if you don’t @_krox

Random Update

10 Nov

I’ve randomly thought of myself making this post and trying to explain exactly why I  have not been updating this blog. And yes, I know, I could come up with all forms of excuses right now, but I wont. Matter of fact, I do not think I will ever put up excuses on this blog. But rather, I will, (when I do) tell the truth about everything.

Now its been a crazy two months or something. I had a magazine coming out, had my first DSLR coming through, but that did not happen. I had the money alright, I had everything all planned out and boy, was I all excited. there’s nothing as better as that. nothing that I had waited so much for so long as that. but, you know, as LIFE would turn out. in the twists of events, that money just, well, disappeared. in the most hurtful of ways. I want to tell, but, in all honesty, I don’t think I have the strength to.

In a nut shell, that really ruined my creative process. yeah, its been a while before I finally bounced back. I went through these moments of  feeling really bad about everything. you see, its different, I had waited for this moment since last year. saved, work hard just to achieve this one thing. a DSLR camera. but what happens after you think you’ve finally gotten the cash? it disappears. Boy,you have no idea how that may feel.

But I got myself together. or so I think I did. I have been doing a lot of finding myself. And I’m almost getting to that moment where I can do it all over again. I evaluated if I really want this. I found out I do, because within the heart break, there was this bickering glimmer of hope.  It was too existent for me to ignore it. It is such moments I would laugh  to myself just to ease what I was feeling. I think it is easier for people to get over things that they don’t think are such a big deal to them. But this was sort of a big deal to me and I was really looking forward to it. I thank God all the same that whatever happened to me did, because it left me with more lessons than I’ve got before.

So what did it teach me,  probably that is a topic for yet another day, where I should explore those aspects. I’m just finally glad I had the strength to get back to blogging as I did with other stuff.

Diary of a Photography enthusiast. The Questions.

19 Sep

The Krox magazine is coming up smoothly, but rather a bit too slow than I had anticipated. I was hoping to be done by two issues by right now, but as it turns out, I am still struggling with the first issue. But all the same, I cannot complain. The first issue is coming up just as I had anticipated. There is a part of the magazine that I have been intending to include in every issue. I have been a David duChemin student for some time, and I do believe in his aspect of why vision is better than gear, and how to improve your vision without necessarily getting more gear. I too share in his belief that a better photographer takes the better photo, and not necessarily, the better camera.

David is almost releasing his new book, Photographically speaking. This book will be about photographers being able to talk about photos. He says, that the more people are able to talk about photos, it makes their images stronger, as they are able to know what they want. When photographers are able to critique other photos in terms of elements, and the decisions made, and what made them respond to the photo as they did as much as what they would do differently if they had a chance, strengthens ones vision.

I have not yet read the book. But when I read its “About” few months back, I knew that is something that I would like to give a shot. So I started looking at photographs beyond ‘its beautiful’ , ‘I like it’ and ‘wow’. I started looking deeper, trying to find out what really made me find the photo interesting, and as much as I did not always come up with what I would have done differently if I did the shot, I realized I started to sort of feel what the person taking the photo felt. Why did he use the exposure he used or the lighting and just what effect did it have on me.

I have been terribly thinking of incorporating that part into my weekly magazine kind of thing, but I honestly, do not know how. I mean, I’m not all that versed with photography lingo kinda vibe. I’m amateur, I know. But would it hurt anyone if I went ahead and tried hacking the photo and discussing it in my own way? Well, I guess not. Still, I am really thinking about it.

Would love for anyone to hit me up and tell me what they think. I’ve been relying on myself a whole too much lately its kind of draining. I just hope that by evening I will sort of have a way forward or something.

Another thing, I may be getting my camera this week. ( crosses fingers). I hope I do. If at all it happens, I will let you know asap. I even have a name for him. And yeah, I think my first camera will be a guy. Lol J I’ll not let you in right now, so I’ll keep you guessing.

Well, yesterday I did some pages off the first issue, and  got to say, I really like it. Its kinda hard to not talk about it. Had it been someone else’s magazine, I would probably keep quiet about it. Unfortunately though, I am not that good at keeping such secrets, so I will spill… even share the image. I like the design, got to say, its one of those things that after you pull off you really feel happy for yourself. Today I will do probably two other pages then I’ll be remaining with like two more plus the cover page to finish off the first issue. I’m also planning on the second issue. When it comes out, you will realize that the first issue just sort of gave a general introduction into the whole thing. I’m thinking of going abit deeper with the second issue. Thing is, there are actually just way too many things to talk about when it comes to photography. The topics are just too many. We’ll see how that goes all the same.

The Sweet Challenge. The Krox Magazine update.

14 Sep

I love a sweet challenge. Especially one that you know you can eventually hack through, and you start seeing some progress. Well, that’s kinda how its been with this magazine project. The first issue is well almost complete and I have to say, I am very happy for the progress. Why? Well, because as much as it seems insanely difficult, I have been in a position to actualize the designs and the concepts I had for the first issue. The hard task really has been, translating what I see and have in my mind into what I have on the screen. I had it almost all figured out as I had drawn the first issue outline in my diary. Yes, my big book of creative stuff. Not a sketch pad, but a normal single ruled book. But then translating exactly what I wanted has been one big problem. Because for one, I had not thought about colors, and colors can give you a really huge problem. For most part. Generally because it is very hard to think of colors that fit. I see myself creating projects in mind complete with the suggested color, not just telling myself, I want an awesome color for the page. Which I think is a mistake I do most of the times. When I ask myself what is it I want to get, I tell myself, “just a really awesome/creative/complex/simple/beautiful… and so on, piece”. That I have realized, does me more harm than good.

Another challenge has been to recreate the elements that I see in my mind that will fit the page. These are icons, vectors and even ribbons. As it turned out, I did not have the icons I wanted and had initially worked on, so I set out to create my own as I worked on the project. When I hacked through my first icon, I was really pleased. It felt like a reasonable achievement. Then I had to draw out these cameras. I have to be honest, this is one project that I am really pleased at the progress. It’s not quite done yet, but I am proud of the little things I am doing. I had to draw these camera gadget things for some illustrations in the magazine that I had in mind and had drawn out in my book. The major problem is, I really suck at using the pen tool in illustrator. I have been trying and giving up for over a year now. So I went back into what I was comfortable in, Photoshop, traced the image. But the image was a raster file since it was made in Photoshop ( this means that it was very much pixelated- which means that it had very many pixels- which are like dots and stuff… you get the point do you?… well in short it means that if you make the image really big, it will lose the detail and look really dotty and blurred and stuff…phew!) So I went back into illustrator and converted it into a vector based image ( Google this one, but it’s the opposite really, image retains its detail even at extremely high sizes) then back into Photoshop for the edits and stuff.

What I am loving most out of this project, is that, I am not only using tools that I am most comfortable with, but files that will enable me to achieve and complete a certain task that I have set my mind up to do.

I have a lot on my mind for future projects that I will be sharing sooner. Keep checking to see the progress of the Krox magazine. It’s the only thing that I will be talking about from now on, on this blog, but just the update. So worry not people, I have not completely lost my blogging Mojo (lol, that is if I even had one)

This is an image that I had sketched out and the final result… I think I may be only showing that 0ne for now. Any ways, have a good day/night. Catch you later.

Diary of a Photography enthusiast : The magazine first update

13 Sep

So I just had to post this up and let you know that I did take it seriously and I am going ahead with it. The magazine is in production and its coming through quite smoothly. Well, I did refine the ideas. And I still want to be able to do it weekly. Working in indesign has not been easy. As a matter of fact, I scratched off the indesign idea for now. I am working between photoshop, illustrator and other applications. I have the indesign tutorials though, I feel like if I concentrate on them, I will not be ab

le to move on with this project.

One of the main reasons why I am doing this is to challenge myself. So the trick is to remain productive and to try all possible ways to pull off what I have in mind, regardless of how hard it may seem. That is why I have a feeling that, probably these first issues won’t be as awesome, but as time goes by, the awesomeness level shall surely be reached at. That is the purpose of prac

tice anyway. So just what exactly do I feel this challenge will give me?

For one, the ability to work easily and smoothly yet achieving creativity in graphics and related fields. Such as photography. I also feel that, writing for my own magazine will increase my knowledge, through research and study and in the field of photography. And clearly as you can see, these are good qualities. One reason why I would like to expound my knowledge in digital art probably is because I am thinking of making it my side hustle. Trust me, a brother’s got to eat. And well, in future you never know wh

at it may grow to be. *pause* .  Another reason why I challenge myself daily is the hope that one day I will grow and be like my favorite artists and photographers. You all agree that even pros were once armatures right? Yeah, so I’m unashamed of that. Plus, seing growth is a really awesome thing. You know, few years later I look  back and I say to myself, this is where it all began, look at me now. Although I am not exactly beginning, the reference is the same.

And yeah, Gary’s book “Crush It” has had a lot to do with my current inspiration. I do not want  to live the rest of my life doing things I totally feel I do not like just because it brings in some cash at the end of the day. I want to be able to live my dream. But the funny part is that, my greatest dream is also my greatest fear. And the fear  is failure. I decided to get over this whole fear thing and just do it. Regardless of how much I fail. What exactly is my dream? My dream is to be a creative genius. Yeah I know, sounds vague and pathetic. But I want to be identified as a creative person, using what I was granted to by God when I was born. Not just some photographer or, illustrator, or film maker or even just some digital artist. No. My dream is bigger than that. My dream encompasses changing perspectives, and leaving a mark on people’s lives, and that can only be achieved by giving whatever I am doing 300% ( my dad told me this one, I hope to tell my son one day)

Okay, I know, this journal entry has taken a totally different direction, as I was saying, the magazine was supposed to come out starting the first week of October. Yesterday I was sorta unsure if it is even

possible to pull something like that off, but I do figure that it is the ‘giving it your all that counts. So I’ll keep trying to achieve that target. Even though it may not entirely happen, I promise that the first issue , which is just like 10 pages will be ready the set date and time (I’ll reveal that soon).

The magazine, fortunately,or unfortunately, will focus on photography and related creativ

e fields. That means, anything creative that goes hand in hand with photography. I have randomly day dreamed (dremt??) of where this magazine may go, what it may turn out to be, if it will actually be a magazine. I am thinking 100% digital. I finally found out ways to embed videos and audio files into pdfs , thinking ipad, thinking iBooks. Generally I’m just thinking big. And as  much as it may seem as a pipe dream currently, it may come to pass. Lets pray on that.

Aaany way, I finally started doing a collection of African photographers and digital artists. To say the

least, there is too much talent out there. I cant even comprehend it. It is way too much. Will do a post on it later on, now I gotta rush to school.

And here, is something that has really wowed me, from a Nigerian artist,

ITS BEEN A YEAR.

3 Sep

So its been a year since I decided to start this blog specifically for photography and creativity related stuff. True, it has gone through major changes and I have taken time really discovering myself and what I really love and would like to pursue. I was looking through and at some of the images that I have shot over the year. Actually. almost all the images I have posted here I shot last year. Yeup, I have almost shot zero photos that I have uploaded to this blog.

As a year elapses, I am just about to acquire my first DSLR camera, and I gotta say, things done changed. I have not uploaded any photo that I shot this year, since most of them have been going into my photography sketchbook. Where I have learnt many things, including post processing and even lighting. As  I acquire my first DSLR, I hope to give this new year a run for its creativity. I hope. man, lets pray.

Anywho, as a year elapses, this are some of the photos I shot and I liked. I would probably do it all differently if I had the chance, but I thank God that I had a place to start from and this was it.

These should be like the 5 images that I have liked so much over the one year that has passed. I know that I may be able to do so much better now than then, but dont everyone got a place to start. Plus, I shot these using the Sony DSC-HX1 that my Dad owns . I was really limited into what I could do with the photos, plus, I had almost zero lessons in composition and all that other photography related stuff.

WEll, I think I can only say that this is the beginning of newer stuff, strengthening the passion, learning more, and be keen on the road to awesomeness. Oh and by the way, I am not ashamed of my first photos ( those I shared with the world that is.

Diary of A Photography Enthusiast

3 Sep

Its been a crazy two weeks, gotta say. but I have loved each and every moment of it. We took a short break from school after the semester came to a close. Then I was involved in tons of projects, and none of them involved photography or creativity. But  its a good thing, because they involved things like character building and mentor-ship.  I was involved with this youth group that had professional counselors who taught on many issues. It really was fun.

In the mean time, I still kept the creative/creativity vibe going on. I was all over, consuming what I could, always, getting inspiration from almost anywhere I could, videos, blogs, music videos, pictures, people and almost just about any other source. i have gotta say though, there’s loads of creative talent out there. I was thinking though, if we could have like a creativity/arts African oriented magazine or blog, or something.  I mean, there is loads of talent out there which i really feel is awesome and should be shown to the rest of the world. Well, had we such a thing it would have been way easier for people to gain African inspiration. Such is limited online and one may spend hours on end trying to chase after something like that.

I also finished reading Crush it by Gary Vaynerchuk. Powerful book. You know what, I think anyone who wants to be able to create a solid presence online and eventually cash in on it should read this book. Well, that is why I am so psyched about this whole blogging thing. As a matter of fact, I am laying ground for The Krox website and a Magazine. This blog is what happens before  the official Krox blog comes to life. It may be one of the epic-est things to happen to my life.

Well, I gotta say that currently what is consuming me is the Magazine idea. I really wanna go ahead with it. I’m not even stopping to weigh the options, I’m just goin to go ahead and do it.

Inspiration: Wedding Photography by Daniel Griffiths

23 Aug

Daniel Griffiths is an Australian based photographer his style of Photography is deeply authentic and has a photo journalistic feel. It is no surprise, as he is a seasoned photo journalist.

I found his work on Youtube a little over a year ago. Over time, I have not been able to find his other work online, although he has a beautiful website and a blog. Visit his blog here. And Website Here.

Well I really do not have much to say, but, this is defintely a talented wedding photographer.

For some time now, I have wanted to do a research on wedding photography, so I went back, collecting inspiration and looking all over for photographers whom I feel inspire me much when it comes to photography. Here is one of them, the angles, composition and the editing of these photos is just superb. Not to mention the lighting and the location.

My hope is that you are able to grasp some inspiration from his work, as his work is truly something to marvel at. I wouldn’t be exactly able to define what his style is, but it is unique and beautiful. And that is what counts. I have heard a whole lot the discussion about wedding photography not being an art, and I disagree. It is, this work is proof that it is.

Check this out.

And well, here are videos from his Youtube Channel. Hope you watch them, enjoy, then get inspired.

1. the one I fell in love with totally.

2. A randomly beautiful one.

3. A later one with newer beautiful images.

Be inspired.
