I may be upgrading

21 Jan

Wassup world?

i may be upgrading to my personal site soon. it’s slightly just a bit of something that I have been wanting to do for a while, so yeah, I guess I am excited for it. the reason why? well, alot really, I have previously started some really cool projects that in the near future may go into my CV or my BIO. I am looking to get a personal site/blog kind of thing where I can post random information about myself and what I am doing. I am a firm believer of Bio being stronger than  a CV. Okay, look at it this way, right, if say someone like larry King was fired from CNN for whatever reason may be, when he applies for a new job, what are the chances that most people will more willing to hire his services than not? Why? because he has a much stronger bio and his life work speaks volume.

Well, the Internet sort of gives us the opportunity to create something close to that but on an online sphere. Look at how web 2.0 has gone to personalize the web, with the rise of many social networks and the advantages that have come along with it, which includes doing business, and doing it good.(making profit and marketing, not necessarily in that order)

So as much as I am doing a project 365 on my flickr, check out here, I am also doing school stuff that I am hoping will be of tremendous advantages to me and my career in future. yeah, also the coillusion project that took off is amazing. I talked about coillusion in this post here. I am also dancing, travelling, and a whole bunch of other stuff that I have not yet talked about.

What I’m looking to upgrade to is a very simple and basic site. Most preferably wordpress blog. I am in LOVE with the robustness of wordpress blogs, I do run a tumblr too, starting the beginning of this year that really just focuses on African stuff and all.

Aaaanywho, I hope to keep you updated.

When Do you STOP?

11 Jan

Today I have been hit by a perfect, ‘when do you stop?’ scenario.

Mostly when in post processing, we usually aim for a specific look and touch to your photo. Well, at times that might not necessarily be the case, sometimes you may just be playing around waiting to see what really gives. In my today situation, I was looking to hit that  magenta/purplish I smile kind of backdrop color in “I smile” video by Kirk franklin. I know I have a long way to go.

Well, I almost hacked it, I think, But I did not, I kept going through these processes that I felt like they were pulling me back, and as I continued, I wasn’t just really feeling my outcome anymore. I decided to wing it anyway, and come with an interesting result regardless. That was not going to be such a hard task, I thought to myself. Believe me though, it was such hard work. Excruciatingly hard work (okay, I’m being dramatic)

The main reason however why I got what I got, is that I did not exactly fuse my vision with what I had at hand and thought carefully about what I was to do. Vision is key, and there is pre shoot vision, shooting-time vision and post process vision. Mine were kind of the same, that is why I got what I got.

So, when do you stop? You stop when you think you’ve achieved the closest thing to what you had in mind. It is very possible to keep going and going and never really hitting. When you get to that point when you feel like you should really stop because you are almost there, STOP. That is what I did today.

I plan to lean a process, a creative process over this period, and most likely share it with you guys in the near future. Here’s the video of what I was hoping to get, with a little more textured back drop. Hope to get it much better for a children’s home project I have in mind..

Living The ‘Dream’

11 Jan

I have randomly thought about this subject for a while now without actually coming up with a definite answer to this. I mean, dreams, isn’t it just about the widest topic out there?. What is a dream really, why do we have them, what if we did not dream, what if we lived our dreams, would we still have other dreams, are dreams  aligned with someone’s purpose in life?, and how can you have a purpose in life when the sole intention should be to remain alive?

Well, I probably do not know the answer to most of those questions, I probably do, or just not care that much. What stays on my mind however, is why a specific subject can consume you wholly, make you go sleepless just thinking about something. We might have been there, wanted something so badly you’d feel it in your bones.  I am an ashamed dreamer. Most people do not like admitting that. I enjoy dreaming randomly of what may happen to what or when or where. Most of the times I know my limits. I know when to stop, when to snap back to reality, when its all said and done.

I took time out basically to evaluate mine, to laugh at myself for a little while, pat myself in the back, feel good, feel bad, you know, just basically all the emotions that are involved. It’s been such a mind opening session for me as I even do that to myself. Now, I agree that it is possible to live a dream, but mostly what we ignore is the hardwork that goes into making, or trying to make a dream a reality.

There is too much that meets the eye than just living a dream, than just dreaming, think about it though, the only way we can is through hard work..

What did I just tell you?… think about it..

Here’s my 5th image of a 365 project..

Painting With Digital Light

9 Jan

Remember the post where I told you about painting with Digital Light by Live Rasoloarison ?? ( worry not, it’s just a few posts below) well, I went ahead and gave it a shot some time back. Just this instant I thought to myself that it might make a good blog post. Well, how wouldn’t it?

Anywho, it was epic giving it a trial. I took a rather boring image and post processed it, kinda looking to give it that amazing light streaks that the other photographer had blown me away with.

Here it is,

Incase you are wondering, those are my pals. I am/ was involved in a dance group in school last year (this year too, God willing) An amazing bunch of dancers these guys are.  Okay, so yeah, I accredit all the inspiration behind this from that other post I told you guys about. What do you think, is it a type of processing I should explore??

peace

9 Jan

So I told ya’ll I started my 365 project. Mine is a random one, where I get to create mini challenges for myself and  make sure that I complete them in the best way possible, for the next 3 hundred and 60 something (I think 1) days.

So today’s post was as random as any photo could be. I’ve always wanted to do a street shot. Which I think I will do many of them this year. Especially night shots, when I’m out of school. (Watch out for that) . So I was chilling outside a store in Bungoma. There is something about this town that is just so magical to me. I love how small and bursting with life this small town is.

I did not really plan this, that is why I’m saying that it was random, but I absolutely fell in love with the shot afterwards, I decided to do some cinematic with a greenish tint to it.

Here was the result.

So any way, my prayer is that my images grow even stronger this year. That I take time to strengthen my vision and my artistic abilities. I hope to make more friends, learn more, grow more…and also maybe, do a blog post more frequently.

I suggest viewing my flickr to see more of my images and comment on them.

Painting with Digital Light #inspiration

16 Nov

I am sitting here, planning to do this post, but I know if I let it go, I may not be able to do this post any time soon. So I just have to do it.

I stumbled on some of the most epic digital painting by a French artist that I have just got to share. He goes by his name, (I think studio name ) Live Rasoloarison is a malagasy freelance graphic artist who lives in Paris. He is specialized in illustration, graphic design, photo retouching and digital photography. ( from his ‘about me’)

Any who, without further ado,…

LESSONS

14 Nov

In the last blog update i had posted about my previous under goings and just exactly why I went silent on the blog thing for a little while. As I sit here, I am evaluating what type of lessons I most probably may have got from that whole experience. What may I have adopted into my system because of what happened to me?

1.Shit Stuff happens.

This is life, and when we play life, it gets unpredictable. You may have all these plans, visions and dreams that do not necessarily happen as planned. Nature and ‘fate’ sometimes takes its course and things do not go exactly as you had envisioned them. I guess that is why they came up with Murphy’s law. But isn’t that the joy of everything, knowing that everything will be just as unpredictable?

As much as that happens. It should never put us down. The fact that the pursuit of happiness does not exactly bring happiness may be the key point in focus here. Rather, it is the happiness of pursuit that makes us happy. Pursuing your dreams and your passions and plans gives more joy in the process itself rather than achieving the subject in pursuit. So here’s my two cents, Life will always throw stuff at you, make the best, enjoy the process, do not forget who you really are.

2. Make the Most of every situation.

My older cousin, who is just more like a sister to me, @soul_fool once told me, when Life gives you lemons, don’t just make lemonade alone, go ahead and make lemon cake, lemon soda, and just particularly anything that can be made using lemons. Life giving you lemons is like that moment where you are handed something that is not favorable according to you. it is something that may hurt you in a way. the lesson here however, is to use those moments you deem unfavorable to the best of your ability.

When I lost my money, just as I was to get my first DSLR, it really broke my heart. I had planned it out and I was to get it at around August- October. Needless to say, I already had photographic projects all lined out for me in my sketch book. I was gonna take my learning to a whole new level. When ‘the worst’ happened, I was devastated. But how was I going to make such a moment in my life fruity and sweet,( you know the kind of  stress that is money related). But what I decided to do, is to get my creativity on. As much as I wasn’t going to get my camera, I was going to do something major with myself, so, i went ahead and re-awakened this Media Company that I had called Coillusion. I did the logo and the other tiny details and specs in hand.

Here’s the Logo.

3. Bounce back Always.

As is life, one needs to develop a high sense of bouncing back as soon as possible whenever anything happens. For that is to whom the race will be won. The faster you adopt the better. I already adopted to my situation and whatever happened to me and I can say that I am only looking forward to better things more awesome thingss.

More lessons later.

*Magazine update

While through the process, The Krox was going to drop, and I promise you it will, but unfortunately, only one issue of it would. As time went by, through the process, I asked myself, why should I make something that is just about me?, I am going to make something bigger than me. Not The Krox anymore, something bigger.

I will do a complete post on that maybe tonite.

bless.

The Best Excuses when doing Street photography.

20 Sep

Hi guys? How’s your today coming up? Well, mine’s pretty awesome gotta say. I have been reading this free street photography book by Thomas Leuthard called “Going Candid”.  It is a really interesting book, with these really nice ideas and tips about street photography. I am writing because I want to share a part of the book that I found really really interesting. It is a fact that nowerdays more than ever, street photography is not that easy, since many people will confront  you and want to know why you have taken their photograph. Here are really interesting answers that you can give them.

I found these very interesting. Hope you do too.

“I just shot this building in the background and you walked into my photo…!”

“I’m a tourist and I document life in the city”

“I have this new camera I’m testing today…”

“Do you know Bruce Gilden? He is even worse…”

“You should see Eric Kim, he is a creepy Korean tourist with a Leica M9…”

“There is this contest on Flickr I’m participating in…”

“I’m a photo student. Our teacher wants us to shoot people…”

“I work on the 100 Strangers project…”

“I love your beautiful eyes…”

“You have an interesting face…”

“I love your style…”

“You are hot. Can I have your phone number…?”

“You look like my grandmother…”

“I’m a talent scout. Do you want to become famous…?”

“I’m a famous photographer looking for new models…”

“I thought you are a celebrity…”

“I thought you are a famous actor…”

“I took your photo, now you owe me 10 dollars…”

“I want to marry you…”

“Elvis is alive…”

“You look like Osama Bin Laden…”

“Is this your wife or just a cheap hooker…?”

“Don’t look at me, it wasn’t me…”

“My camera is stuck, it shoots by itself…”

“I have a really ugly wife at home and this is curing me…”

“Yes, I’m a pervert. Thanks for helping me getting some satisfaction…”

“I’m an investment banker. The recession made me do that…”

“I’m young and need the money…”

“I have an unhealthy addiction to ugly people…”

“Others use drugs; I do candid portraits of strangers…”

“You will be on television tomorrow…”

“We are making a movie, please stand back…”

“This is a crime scene investigation. I cannot answer your question…”

“Your wife wants me to observe you. Bring her some flowers tonight…”

“I will sell your portrait to a charity to teach disabled children photography”

“Give me your address, I will send you a print…”

“One day you will be proud that I took your photo…”

“No, I cannot delete the photo, it’s on film…”

“…” Pretend that you are deaf-mute.

“…” Pretend you have the Asperger-Syndrom

Lol,.. so I thought I should probably add up a list of my own excuses.

Wear a T-shirt written on, “if you talk to me, you are a humongous fool”

Fake an accent, speak a different language.

“I’m with the C.I.A, talking to me will result in you being tabbed for espionage activity”

“I’ve got problems with my eyes. I only see well with the lens”

“I’ve got a photographic memory. This is an extension of it”

“you are really Ugly, I had to remember you”

“..don’t tell me you have no idea who I am..!!”

Pretend to be looking another direction and keep shooting.

The Sweet Challenge. The Krox Magazine update.

14 Sep

I love a sweet challenge. Especially one that you know you can eventually hack through, and you start seeing some progress. Well, that’s kinda how its been with this magazine project. The first issue is well almost complete and I have to say, I am very happy for the progress. Why? Well, because as much as it seems insanely difficult, I have been in a position to actualize the designs and the concepts I had for the first issue. The hard task really has been, translating what I see and have in my mind into what I have on the screen. I had it almost all figured out as I had drawn the first issue outline in my diary. Yes, my big book of creative stuff. Not a sketch pad, but a normal single ruled book. But then translating exactly what I wanted has been one big problem. Because for one, I had not thought about colors, and colors can give you a really huge problem. For most part. Generally because it is very hard to think of colors that fit. I see myself creating projects in mind complete with the suggested color, not just telling myself, I want an awesome color for the page. Which I think is a mistake I do most of the times. When I ask myself what is it I want to get, I tell myself, “just a really awesome/creative/complex/simple/beautiful… and so on, piece”. That I have realized, does me more harm than good.

Another challenge has been to recreate the elements that I see in my mind that will fit the page. These are icons, vectors and even ribbons. As it turned out, I did not have the icons I wanted and had initially worked on, so I set out to create my own as I worked on the project. When I hacked through my first icon, I was really pleased. It felt like a reasonable achievement. Then I had to draw out these cameras. I have to be honest, this is one project that I am really pleased at the progress. It’s not quite done yet, but I am proud of the little things I am doing. I had to draw these camera gadget things for some illustrations in the magazine that I had in mind and had drawn out in my book. The major problem is, I really suck at using the pen tool in illustrator. I have been trying and giving up for over a year now. So I went back into what I was comfortable in, Photoshop, traced the image. But the image was a raster file since it was made in Photoshop ( this means that it was very much pixelated- which means that it had very many pixels- which are like dots and stuff… you get the point do you?… well in short it means that if you make the image really big, it will lose the detail and look really dotty and blurred and stuff…phew!) So I went back into illustrator and converted it into a vector based image ( Google this one, but it’s the opposite really, image retains its detail even at extremely high sizes) then back into Photoshop for the edits and stuff.

What I am loving most out of this project, is that, I am not only using tools that I am most comfortable with, but files that will enable me to achieve and complete a certain task that I have set my mind up to do.

I have a lot on my mind for future projects that I will be sharing sooner. Keep checking to see the progress of the Krox magazine. It’s the only thing that I will be talking about from now on, on this blog, but just the update. So worry not people, I have not completely lost my blogging Mojo (lol, that is if I even had one)

This is an image that I had sketched out and the final result… I think I may be only showing that 0ne for now. Any ways, have a good day/night. Catch you later.

ITS BEEN A YEAR.

3 Sep

So its been a year since I decided to start this blog specifically for photography and creativity related stuff. True, it has gone through major changes and I have taken time really discovering myself and what I really love and would like to pursue. I was looking through and at some of the images that I have shot over the year. Actually. almost all the images I have posted here I shot last year. Yeup, I have almost shot zero photos that I have uploaded to this blog.

As a year elapses, I am just about to acquire my first DSLR camera, and I gotta say, things done changed. I have not uploaded any photo that I shot this year, since most of them have been going into my photography sketchbook. Where I have learnt many things, including post processing and even lighting. As  I acquire my first DSLR, I hope to give this new year a run for its creativity. I hope. man, lets pray.

Anywho, as a year elapses, this are some of the photos I shot and I liked. I would probably do it all differently if I had the chance, but I thank God that I had a place to start from and this was it.

These should be like the 5 images that I have liked so much over the one year that has passed. I know that I may be able to do so much better now than then, but dont everyone got a place to start. Plus, I shot these using the Sony DSC-HX1 that my Dad owns . I was really limited into what I could do with the photos, plus, I had almost zero lessons in composition and all that other photography related stuff.

WEll, I think I can only say that this is the beginning of newer stuff, strengthening the passion, learning more, and be keen on the road to awesomeness. Oh and by the way, I am not ashamed of my first photos ( those I shared with the world that is.
